India, China looking forward to expanding BPMs : Jaishankar

Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar on Friday said India and China had discussions on ways to strengthen peace and tranquillity on border, adding that both nations would be looking forward to expanding the number of Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) points in the near future.

"There was a fair amount of discussion on the border and on strengthening peace and tranquillity on border. There was a discussion on the border and expanding the number of meeting points. At the moment, we have four BPMs in operation. In the near future, we will be looking to expand the number of BPMs," said Jaishankar while addressing the media here.

 

Jaishankar said leaders of India and China would pay close attention to the border situation.

"There was also a sense that the frequency and the context in which the meeting took place could be expanded. Both sides would work towards implement existing agreements and the leadership would pay close attention to the border situation," he added.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Premier Li Keqiang agreed to enhance border areas cooperation through border trade so as to transform the border into a bridge of cooperation and exchanges.

The two leaders also agreed to hold negotiations on augmenting the list of traded commodities, and expand border trade at Nathu La, Qiangla/Lipu-Lekh Pass and Shipki La.
