The Government of India is closely monitoring meetings between Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit and the Hurriyat leaders, and says it is planning to respond appropriately, it has been reported.

As per sources, "invitation to Hurriyat by Pakistan is a provocative act. It is a pattern that the Pakistani establishment is following since the Ufa talks. The Government of India is monitoring the situation closely and will respond appropriately."

Ahead of the upcoming National Security Advisor (NSA)-level talks, High Commissioner Basit invited Geelani and other Hurriyat leaders for Pakistan NSA Sartaj Aziz's reception party to be held on August 23.

Last year, India had cancelled the foreign secretary-level talks with Pakistan after Basit met Kashmiri separatists ahead of the planned meet.

Post the Ufa talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, incidents like the Gurdaspur and Udhampur terror attacks have taken place. There have also been repeated ceasefire violations along the Line of Control.
