India has conveyed the "sensitivities of the Indian public" to Sri Lanka over the detention of Indian fishermen in international waters and the recent death sentences handed out by a Sri Lankan court to five Indian fishermen who were charged of drug trafficking.

India's Minister of Urban Development M.Venkaiah Naidu, who is attending the Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference of Housing and Urban Development in Seoul, South Korea, expressed his views to Sri Lanka's Minister for Construction Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Wimal Weerawansa during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the conference, reports the Lanka Page web site.

Naidu also raised the issue of detention of Indian fishermen in international waters.

"He emphasized that he is neither complaining nor interfering in the internal issues of Sri Lanka but is conveying sensitivities of Indian Public," the Indian Government said in a statement.

The Colombo High Court had on October 30 sentenced the five Indian fishermen from Rameswaram along with three Sri Lankans to death on charges of drug smuggling. They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for heroin trafficking in 2011.

India said last Friday that it will exhaust the legal process and challenge the death sentence passed on five Indian fishermen by the lower court in the Appellate Court of Sri Lanka.
