President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said the government had doubled the scholarship amount of Bhutanese students during his two-day visit.

Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and other dignitaries were present at the event where President Mukherjee unveiled a school project and a 546-km road project with India's assistance.

"I am pleased to announce that we have decided to enhance the value of Indian Ambassador Scholarship fund from current rupees one crore per annum to rupees two crore per annum," he said.

Addressing a convention in Thimphu, President Mukherjee said there was a deep confidence and trust between the two countries and people.

"Both India and Bhutan are presently focused on skill development, education and innovation. India has, in the past and will continue in the future, to offer seats in our premier educational institutions to our Bhutanese friends," he added.

Three agreements were signed between the two sides. One between the Royal University of Bhutan and the National Innovation Centre in India, another between the Royal University of Bhutan and the University of English and Foreign Languages in India and the third between the Royal Civil Service Commission and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM).

President Mukherjee, who is on a two-day visit to Bhutan, received a ceremonial reception upon his arrival in Thimphu yesterday.

He was received by Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck at the Paro International Airport.

The President later met Queen Jetsun Pema at the Tashichhodzong in Thimphu. He was accorded a warm welcome and was also given a Guard of Honour by the Royal Bhutanese Army.

President Mukherjee is the first Indian head of the state to visit to Bhutan in 26 years.
