India has offered a fellowship programme to the Afghan doctors to enable them provide better health services in the war-affected country.
Around 12 doctors from Afghanistan are presently undergoing fellowship programme at Sir Ganga Ram Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research here.
The Afghan doctors are receiving training in different specialties like cardiac, cosmetic and reconstruction surgery, chest medicine and liver transplant.
The three-year programme includes research and writing thesis.
Babreqhe Sehzada, a cardiologist from Afghanistan, said that his country needs medical experts to deal with the rising health related cases.

"Health Sector has been destroyed due to decades of war in our country. We do not have new technologies; our patients face lots of challenges. I am doing practice in cardiac surgery. When I return back, I will be the first or second cardiac surgeon in Afghanistan because there has never been any centre in cardiac surgery," said Sehzada.
"My country needs specialist doctors in Afghanistan. When I will go back to Afghanistan, I will be able to practice what I have learned in India," said Dr. Asadullah Katawazai, a cosmetic surgeon.
The students have to pay Rs. 45,000 annually for enrolment in the fellowship programme.
Abdul Wali Khan, a specialist in chest medicine, is keen to serve in Afghanistan after completion of the training.
"Paktika is a very cold region in Afghanistan where temperature falls below minus 20 degrees and most of the people suffer from respiratory diseases. The Government of Afghanistan has sent us to India to become more proficient in treating chest ailments," he said.
Many people in Afghanistan suffer from tuberculosis, asthma and pneumonia. As there are no chest specialists available, patients have to face a lot of challenges.
India is keen to help Afghanistan rebuild its infrastructure and manpower in specialized jobs.
"We had a meeting about two weeks ago with the Afghan Ambassador and we are in favour of having collaboration with Afghanistan in promoting the health sector. We are also interested in providing training to Afghanistan in academic medicine, which is the hallmark of the Ganga Ram Hospital", said Samiran Nundy, Dean, Sir Ganga Ram Institute for Post Graduate Medical Education and Research.
India is extending help to Afghanistan to improve its skilled manpower by providing facilities to a large number of students and professionals to undergo training in New Delhi. (ANI)
