India pays tribute to martyrs of 1971 War

Vijay Diwas which marks India's military triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 War was observed across the country to pay tributes to the martyrs of the war on Monday.

Defence Minister A K Antony, accompanied by three Services Chiefs, laid circlet of flowers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate in Delhi on Monday morning.

Chief of Pakistani forces, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi along with over 93 thousand troops had surrendered to Indian Armed Forces led by General Jagjit Singh Aurora, in the Ramna Race Course, after losing the war in Dhaka, on this day.

Ramna Race Course is currently named as Suhrawardy Udyan.

 

On 27th March 1971, Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi had expressed full support of her government to the Bangladeshi struggle for independence.
