Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, Ambassador Asoke Kumar Mukerji, has said that India is ready to take on bigger responsibilities in United Nations in the coming times.

He was talking to ANI after attending the 70th United Nations Anniversary in Memory of Dag Hammarskjold on Saturday, at the Grace Cathedral, San Francisco.

"The big change in last few years has been focus on the process of how to create additional seats in the Security Council that are required in order for countries like India to become permanent members," he said.

"India has joined the UN in 1945 but the geopolitical realities have changed drastically since 1945, when the set-up of the current Council was decided. The Security Council has changed very little during this long period," he added.

"It is our hope that in this session of the General assembly which ends on the 14th September this year will agree on a process to create additional seat and it would be possible for countries like India which want to play bigger responsibility in the United Nation Security Council by being elected as newly elected members of the Security Council".

Meanwhile at the Cathedral, more than 1,400 members of the UN and USA, United Religions Initiative, Grace Cathedral, Bay Area Interfaith Organizations and other civil society organizations participated in the event. (ANI)
