India have seized momentum on day four of the second Test against Sri Lanka as they require eight more wickets to level the three-match series in Colombo.

Chasing a huge 413-run target, Sri Lanka lost opener Kaushal Silva (1) and retiring legend Kumar Sangakkara early in their reply.

Sangakkara made 18 in his final international innings as Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed him for the fourth time in four innings.

Sri Lanka made 72-2 before stumps as captain Angelo Mathews and Dimuth Karunaratne will resume their innings on their respective scores of 23 and 25 on the last day.

Earlier, Ajinkya Rahane struck his fourth Test century of his career as India declared their second innings on 325 for eight, an hour into the final session.

Resuming at the overnight score of 70-1, Rahane and Murali Vijay went on to accelerate the innings as the duo shared a solid 140-run partnership for the second wicket.

Rahane made 126, while Vijay made a classy 82 before he was trapped lbw by off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal.

Rohit Sharma chipped in with 34, while Stuart Binny and Ravichandran Ashwin contributing 17 and 19 respectively.

Wicketkeeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha wouldn't take the field for the start of Sri Lanka's reply as he suffered a hamstring injury shortly after coming out to bat. KL Rahul will be given the charge behind the stumps on the fifth day.

Sri Lanka lead the three-match series after claiming a remarkable 63-run victory in the first Test in Galle.
