India sends drinking water in five C17, IL17 transport aircrafts to Male(Updated)

India on Friday sent drinking water in five C17and IL17 transport aircrafts to Male as Maldives is facing massive water scarcity.

Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said that India's High Commissioner in Maldives, Rajeev Shahare, has handed over the assistance.

"Big bird comes with water in its bowels. India's High Commissioner in Maldives @RajeevShahare hands over assistance," tweeted Akbaruddin.

"Ships are also being deployed. First of our ships will reach by tomorrow," he added in his tweet.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj assured that more planes carrying water are going to Maldives.

"A plane carrying water has already landed in Male. More will follow. A ship will reach tonight," Swaraj tweeted.

 

Earlier today, the first IL-76 with drinking water had already been sent to Male, after Maldives had asked for help from the country.

According to reports, water supply to more than 100,000 residents in the Maldives capital was cut off, after the city's water treatment plant caught fire.

The country has reportedly appealed to India, Sri Lanka, China and the United States for help.
