Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Anil Wadhwa, on Monday said that India and Thailand have signed an MoU on Double Taxation Avoidance (DTA) agreement during the joint commission meeting held here.

"We have signed a very important MoU today on Double Taxation Avoidance (DTA) agreement which is going to help our investments. We also exchanged the ratification for the extradition treaty," he said.

Wadhwa further said security is one important aspect of the relationship between both sides.

"And the extradition treaty because it will go into force from today onwards, will mean we can directly approach the Government of Thailand and vice-versa," he added.

Wadhwa informed that the Joint Commission meeting took place after a gap of three years this time due to the changes in government, especially in Thailand.

"As you know, the Joint Commissions are suppose to be held on a regular basis every year but there was a gap of three years between the last Joint Commission and this one due to the governmental changes, especially in Thailand," he said.

Wadhwa further said that the meeting of the Joint Commission has given an opportunity to review the relationship between New Delhi and Bangkok ranging from the commerce and industry investments to culture.

"And anything that has been pending from some time, by ways of MoUs, something we could not pay attention to for some time has all been taken into account during this meeting," he said, adding that the discussions over the last two days have been excellent.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is currently on a three-day official visit of Thailand, met her Thai counterpart General Tanasak Patimapragorn earlier today.
