India wins first ever bronze in junior women hockey World Cup

India's junior Women hockey team made the country proud by winning the first ever bronze medal at the World cup in Germany after defeating England 3-2 on penalties.

18-year-old Rani Nagpal, a forward striker in the team, scored India's only goal in the regulation time and got two more goals in the penalty shoot-out, brought home India's outstanding win in women's hockey.

The team returned home and received a warm welcome at the New Delhi Airport on Tuesday.

Rani Nagpal attributed the glorious victory to the whole team.

"Women hockey team has won bronze medal for India this time. We all are very happy that after such a long time, India had reached quarterfinals in such a major tournament and have won bronze. The whole team as well as the coaching staff made a lot of efforts for this," she told media here today.

 

Nagpal also hoped that the win would provide boost to India's women hockey.

"This is very important for our women's hockey because women's hockey was going low from a long time and this medal has made a base for women's hockey that we have to rise above this level. We want that women's hockey team would rise and more talented players would come in the team," she added.

According to reports, Rani had put India ahead in the 13th minute through her brilliant field goal. The team maintained the lead till the half-time break.
