Miss America 2014, Nina Davuluri, has brushed off the racist comments about her on Twitter.

Davuluri said that she has to rise above the negativity, as she has always viewed herself first and foremost as an American, the Guardian reported.

The micro-blogging site flooded with racist comments, soon after the 24-year-old pageant winner, who has become the first winner of Indian descent, was crowned.

A user said that one needs to be "American" to be crowned Miss America, whereas another user asked when will a white woman win the coveted pageant.

Davuluri who addressed her first press conference after her win said that she was happy that the organisation has embraced diversity.
