Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin today confirmed the safety of about a dozen Indian workers who were arrested in Kuwait following a brawl with foreign nationals.

The MEA spokesperson also added that around a dozen or two Indian nationals have been taken into custody and another 10 to 15 are injured and are in hospital but assured that all of them were safe.

"Our mission has gone to all the hospitals there to check about the welfare of the Indian nationals there and I can confirm to you that no Indian national is in any danger. All are out of danger in terms of their medical condition," said Akbaruddin.

The rest of the Indian nationals are in their camp and not in any danger at this stage, Akbaruddin added.

Assuring that the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was keeping herself abreast of the situation and was giving directions whereever required, Akbaruddin urged the Indians in Kuwait to abide by the local laws and regulations.

He also said that the MEA was leaving no stone unturned to provide assistance to the Indian nationals.

He said, "We have immediately taken action. Our mission in Kuwait has written to the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry and sought their assistance in the matter. We have also requested for councilor assistance and we will provide councilor assistance to any Indian national who needs that."

"We have called the management of the company to discuss with them and we will work with them to try and ensure that normal food provision, etc are there for Indian nationals in the camp. Incidentally they are in the camp and we are working through this. Despite today being a Friday which is a holiday in Kuwait we have worked through this," said Akbaruddin.

He also said that earlier in the day, Indian workers in Kuwait appealed to secure the release of their colleagues, who have been arrested on charges of murder.

According to reports, 25 Indian workers in Kuwait have been arrested for allegedly killing two Egyptians.
