Sri Lankan all-rounder Jeevan Mendis has been ruled out of the World Cup with a hamstring injury on Wednesday and will be replaced by seasoned batman Upal Tharanga in the squad.

Mendis played in both World Cup tie against New Zealand and Afghanistan, taking two wickets.

Sri Lanka lost the opening game against New Zealand by 98 runs and registered their first win with a four-wicket win over Afghanistan in Dunedin, and will play Bangladesh on Thursday in Melbourne.

Skipper Angelo Mathews said that Upul would be arriving tonight but Jeevan would be out for minimum two-three weeks, so he would be out and going back after the game, Stuff.co.nz reported.

Mathews added that Upul would be in contention [for Bangladesh] but they would among the management and selectors decide if they want to play him or not.
