Sri Lanka pace spearhead Lasith Malinga will miss the upcoming T20 series against South Africa after sustaining a knee injury last week.

The 33-year-old was expected to be a part of Lanka T20 side, but he had complained about pain in both knees during a practice game played in Colombo,Sport24 reported.

Malinga, who has appeared in 191 ODIs and 62 T20Is for Lanka, played his last match in the Asia Cup held in Bangladesh in February 2016 and could not make his way back into the team because of various medical reasons.

The fast bowler was expected to make a return in competitive cricket late last year, but a bout of dengue sidelined him.

Lanka will play their third and final dead rubber Test against South Africa from January 12 in Johannesburg before playing a three-match T20 series beginning January 20 in Centurion.
