Spanish tennis player David Ferrer has pulled out of the yet to take-off Champions Tennis League (CTL) citing health issues for the same.

Speaking on his pull out David Ferrer said that he is sorry to tell his fans in India and in Punjab that he would not be able to play the CTL in India.

The Spaniard also said that over the last 6 weeks, his tournament schedule has been hectic and because of the many games he has played, a serious inflammation in the lower back has appeared, which prevents him from being able to compete at 100 percent.

Ferrer said that this injury would not allow him to perform to the best of his ability as hje feels pain in his back and needs 10 to 15 days to recover. He added that he had been very excited to play for the Punjab Marshalls team in the CTL but unfortunately this year is impossible.

Ferrer also said that he hopes that he can come to India next year and be a part of the League.

Commenting on this development, former Indian tennis player Vijay Amritraj said that this is a sad day for the CTL, adding that Ferrer is a great player and to not have him come and play for his team, the Punjab Marshalls, is a big blow to both the Marshalls as well as to CTL.

Amritraj further said that Ferrer's injury is hopefully a minor one, but they wish him a speedy recovery. He added that obviously the challenge is to now find someone who would be a suitable replacement for the Spaniard, who would bring charisma and personality along with world class tennis skills to the Punjab Marshalls in their attempt to win the inaugural edition of the CTL.
