The Regional Met Department on Wednesday predicted that intermittent showers is likely to continue in Chennai and adjoining areas as the deep depression over south west Bay of Bengal is likely to move north and north westwards.
The depression is likely to turn as a cyclone and cross between Nellore and Odisha in the next 24 hours. The depression has brought heavy rains in Chennai for the past two days.
Kelambakkam in Kanchipuram district, adjacent to Chennai, recorded the maximum amount of rainfall of 23 cms in the past 24 hours.
Rainfall is also likely to occur at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfall over south Andhra Pradesh coast during the next 48 hours, the MET office said.
The district administrations in northern districts have been asked to take precautionary measures.

The district collector in Chennai assured that separate teams have been put in place to drain out the stagnant water in low lying areas.
Control rooms have also been set up in districts to respond to emergency calls.
