International Democracy Day is being observed today across the globe to raise public awareness about the democratic system.
The theme for this year is "Democracy and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development".
United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon on the occasion urged the people to rededicate themselves to democracy and dignity for all.
"The implementation of the goals must be underpinned by a strong and active civil society that includes the weak and the marginalized. We must defend civil society's freedom to operate and do this essential job. On this International Day of Democracy, let us rededicate ourselves to democracy and dignity for all," Ban Ki-moon said.
The Government agencies and non-governmental organizations across the globe are holding various activities and events to promote democracy.
The UN General Assembly had decided in November 2007 to observe 'International Democracy Day' every year on September 15.
