New Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said his victory this month was a 'mandate for change'.

Rouhani then vowed to remain committed to his campaign promises of moderation and constructive engagement with the international community.

He told a conference in Tehran that he would keep his promise and follow a path of moderation in domestic and foreign policy.

According to the Guardian, the promises by Rouhani could reduce tension between Iran and the West and ease the standoff over Tehran's disputed nuclear programme.

Rouhani won by a landslide in the 14 June presidential election, which was seen in part as a referendum on Iran's nuclear diplomacy.
