The chemic weapons expert of the Islamic State (IS) has been killed in a United States led coalition airstrike in Iraq, said the U.S. military.

According to BBC, the training of the expert, Abu Malik, provided the militant group with the expertise on pursuing a chemical weapons capability.

Malik served as an engineer under the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein before he joined al Qaeda and then the IS, said U.S. officials.

Malik was killed in Mosul in a raid on January 24th, according to the U.S.

Military chiefs hope to retake the Iraqi city of Mosul with the help of the country's forces this spring.
