Social media giant Facebook is speculated to offer television styled commercial ads on its site for as much as 2.5 million dollars per day.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, sources have claimed that Facebook would offer 15-second spots to advertisers much like its Instagram videos allowing marketers their way directly into a person's feed.
Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said that every night 88 million to 100 million people actively use Facebook during prime-time TV hours in the US alone. However, the company's spokeswoman declined to comment upon the new ad plans.
The sources said that the ads will be sold on a full day basis initially and can only be targeted to users based on their age and gender and therefore allow marketers to provide more target based ads and users won't see a commercial more than three times in a given day.
The report further added the sources saying that chief executive Mark Zuckerberg pushed back the start date at least twice to make sure Facebook's user experience won't be tainted by the ads as he wants high-definition video and easy-to-use playback features.
Facebook's decision is expected to add up to the competition with rival site Twitter which has been courting TV advertisers in its bid to reach 1 billion dollars in sales by 2014, the report added.
