According to Palestinian officials and activists, Islamic State (IS) militants have entered the Palestinian refugee camp Yarmouk in Damascus.

According to BBC, IS militants are seizing control of large parts of the camp after clashes between militants and ground inside the camp.

The United Nations said that there are around 18,000 Palestinian refugees inside the camp.

The group's entrance in Damascus marks the first major attack near the heart of the country's capital.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that IS militants seized large parts of the camp.

A group formed by Palestinian militiamen opposed to the Syrian government, are leading the fight against IS militants along with some Free Syrian Army fighters, said Yarmouk residents.
