Islamic State (IS) militants have planted explosives and landmines in Syria around the Palmyra ruins, said activists that monitor the war in Syria.

According to BBC, the group said that it was not yet clear whether the extremists have laid bombs to destroy the ruins or make the site secure from the government forces.

Syrian government forces are believed to be planning a bid to retake the site from IS militants.

The director of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman said that Syrian soldiers may be planning an operation since they have brought in reinforcements in recent days.

The ancient city was seized by IS militants last month that prompted fears that the group would destroy the 2,000-year-old Roman-era ruins.
