Pakistan's newly appointed Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief is reportedly at odds with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

According to the BBC, Rizwan Akhtar is accused of encouraging recent PTI and PAT protests against the Sharif-led government.

Akhtar, who is reportedly considered an ally of army chief Gen Raheel Sharif, has been promoted from major-general to lieutenant-general to assume the new role.

Akhtar has replaced Lt-Gen Zaheerul Islam who is scheduled to retire in October.

Five other officers have also been promoted to lieutenant general rank as replacements of outgoing personnel.

The appointments are expected to help Akhtar consolidate his position, the report said.
