Islamabad and Kabul have reportedly agreed to the need for substantive and sustained engagement at various levels to achieve the common goals of "peace and stability, economic development, and regional cooperation" during a meeting between Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain and newly elected Afghan President Dr. Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Dr Abdullah Abdullah.

A statement released by Pakistan's foreign ministry said that the meeting took place in Kabul on Monday and focused on issues relating to the political transition in Afghanistan, Pakistan-Afghanistan relations and regional cooperation between the two countries, The Express Tribune reported.

Mamnoon had travelled to Kabul on a day-long trip to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the two Afghan leaders.

While extending his best wishes to the national unity government in Afghanistan, he reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to work closely with the new Afghan government to achieve common goals. He stressed that a stable and peaceful Afghanistan was in Pakistan's interest.

Mamnoon also emphasized the importance of a deeper economic relationship and enhanced people-to-people exchanges.
