Russian officials who are investigating the murder of opposition leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov have said that Islamic extremists may be behind his death.
Investigative Committee listed other possible motives as attempt to destabilize Russia, the Ukraine conflict and his personal life, reported the Independent.
The attacker had shot Nemtsov four times in the back as he passed from a bridge in view of the Kremlin, said the police.
Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the murder, said the Kremlin.
Nemtsov said in a recent interview that he feared that Putin would have him killed for his opposition to war in Ukraine.
U.S. President Barack Obama also condemned the murder urging the Russian government to conduct a "prompt, impartial and transparent investigation".
