Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that India is no longer known as the land of black magic and snake charmers as it has come a long way and added that that it is now time for a 'digital India'.

"'Digital India' is not an elite concept anymore. We have to use this idea to revolutionize health and education in India. Use broadband for education for rural areas, and telemedicine for the poor," Modi said.

"We have to move towards a 'Digital India'. We import electronic goods, but if we start manufacturing these it will benefit the country to a large extent. Let us get involved in the manufacturing sector with zero defect, and without even hurting the environment," he added.

He also appreciated the contribution of the IT industry towards taking the nation ahead.

"People used to think India is a country of black magic and snake charmers. But our IT professionals changed the country's image. Our youth have changed world's perspective towards India," said Modi.

"IT has done for India what the Railways had done to unite the country at one point of time. A 'digital India' will enable us to compete with the world," he added.

Earlier today, the Prime Minister unfurled the flag in the central court of Red Fort, after inspecting the guard of honour.

After hoisting the National Flag from the ramparts of Red Fort, he began his addressal to the nation.

The Prime Minister also paid homage at the Rajghat before reaching the Red fort.
