Reposing its trust in the performance of the Indian canine breed, Mudhol Hounds, the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has entrusted these dogs with the sensitive duties related to the security. On its 57th Raising Day, the ITBP announced its decision to use these dogs along the Line of Actual Control with China.
The ITBP showcased a pure domestic breed of dogs at the Raising Day Parade held on Thursday at their 39 Battalion Head Quarter, Greater Noida.
Till now, breeds like German Shepherd, Labrador and Belgian Malinois were being used for patrolling, explosive detection, tracking and other related duties. However, lesser known Mudhol Hounds, considered highly professional member in the canine (K9) family, have been introduced to sensitive and highly demanding duties. Although at present they are small in number, Mudhol Hounds force is planning to go ahead with breeding these dogs for other forces that have K-9 units.
Mudhols are tall, narrow with great physical strength, high speed and plenty of stamina and are capable of producing excellent results in the field under demanding situations, ITBP sources said. They added that if well-treated, the breed can be exceptionally loyal and protective though they are not friendly towards strangers.
The K-9 squads are, over the years being used for patrolling duties, anti-Naxal operations, security of vital installations and VIP security. ITBP has been credited with introducing K9s in the forces, specially the CAPFs and State Police Forces.
