Former South African President Jacob Zuma will be prosecuted on corruption charges, the country's chief prosecutor Shaun Abrahams said here on Friday.

According to Abrahams, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will reinstate 16 charges, including fraud and corruption, against Zuma, who earlier this year resigned from his post ahead of a no-confidence motion.

"I am of the view that a trial court would be the most appropriate forum for these issues to be ventilated and to be decided upon," CNN News quoted Abrahams as saying.

The scandal-hit leader faces 18 charges involving 783 incidents of racketeering‚ corruption‚ money laundering, fraud and a case in relation to a 1990s arms deal.

Zuma had led African National Congress (ANC) since 2007 and had been the country's president since 2009.

Cyril Ramaphosa, the former Deputy President of South Africa, is Zuma's successor.
