Foreign Secretary Dr. S. Jaishankar on Monday arrived in Thimpu on a three-day official visit.
The visit commencing on October 2 will culminate on October 5.
The two countries share strong bilateral relations.
India remains influential over Bhutan's foreign policy, defence and commerce.
It is Jaishankar's first visit to Bhutan in three years.
Earlier, Jaishankar visited Bhutan in 2015 which was followed by a visit to Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan on SAARC mission.
Also, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made Bhutan his first visit abroad in 2014 under his government's emphasis on the "neighbourhood first policy".
