Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will leave for a two-day visit to Sri Lanka and Maldives on Tuesday.
The relationship between India and Sri Lanka is more than 2,500 years old. Both the countries have a legacy of intellectual, cultural, religious and linguistic interaction.
In recent years, the relationship has been marked by close contacts at all levels.
Political relations between the two countries have been marked by high-level exchanges of visits at regular intervals.
As close and friendly neighbours, India and Maldives share ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious and commercial links steeped in antiquity and enjoy cordial and multi-dimensional relations.
Bilateral relations have been nurtured and strengthened by regular contacts at all levels. Since establishment of diplomatic relations, almost all Prime Ministers of India visited the Maldives.
