Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday reminded naval commanders that preparedness is the best deterrent.
He was addressing the opening ceremony of a four-day naval commanders' conference here.
Jaitley apprised naval commanders of the prevailing and emerging security situation in the subcontinent and the expanding presence of extra regional powers in the India Ocean Region. He also referred to the situation on the western border and its linkage to internal security.
Acknowledging the various crucial requirements of the Indian Navy, Jaitley assured the commanders that "the government is working on all issues very positively and is going to increase the resources".
The defence minister said that due impetus through appropriate defence procurement policies is being given to make good the critical capability shortfalls viz. ship borne Multi Role Helicopters (MRH), conventional Submarines and Mine Counter Measure Vessels (MCMVs).
He also complimented the Indian Navy for its professionalism and deep commitment towards protecting the maritime interests of the country by meeting a large number of international obligations, in line with the country's defence diplomacy requirements.
Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre, defence secretary and other senior functionaries of the Ministry of Defence were also present on the occasion.
