A gigantic underground ice wall is being created to prevent the supply of contaminated water in Fukushima plant from entering the regular water supply in Japan.

The authorities have approved the ambitious plan to freeze the ground around Fukushima plant and disable the water containing radioactive materials from entering the major water supply facilities.

According to The Verge, the project intends to freeze the ground around four reactors, as well as other related buildings, at Fukushima down to a depth of nearly 100 feet. In total, the frozen wall of earth will stretch for nearly nine-tenths of a mile and is meant to reach temperatures of minus 40 degrees Celsius with the construction expected to finish in March of 2015 and cost 314 million dollars.

However, questions were raised with the plant's efficacy and over it's prevention of water contamination in the long term.

The plan has been approved by Fukushima plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), and construction is set to begin from next month, the report added.
