American golfer Dustin Johnson produced a top-notch performance to lead on the opening day of the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

The world number six fired an impressive first-round 66 for six under par, one ahead of second-placed David Lingmerth of Sweden.

Reigning Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth and world number one Rory McIlroy finished the day on one under par, the BBC reported.

Meanwhile, former world number one Tiger Woods struggled as he carded a disappointing 75.

This was McIlroy's first tournament since June after recovering from a ruptured ankle ligament.
