Retired South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis may reportedly battle for the extra berth in his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders with emerging Australian batsman Chris Lynn.

The limit on overseas players could restrict Kallis to the sidelines occasionally even though he top-scored for his side in the IPL opener against Mumbai Indians, which KKR won by 41 runs.

According to Sport24, the teams may only field a maximum of four of their overseas stars, and it seems KKR may initially play Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, along with West Indian spin maestro Sunil Narine and Kallis' compatriot Morne Morkel in the bowling department.

That would leave a toss-up for the extra berth between the veteran Kallis and Lynn, who, the report added, did well for Brisbane Heat in last season's Big Bash and earned his first two Twenty20 international caps for Australia against the touring England side.

It is possible Kallis will be rotated during the event simply to respect his veteran status and ensure he is at his freshest for the franchise in games where his experience is most needed, the report added.
