In a bid to elevate awareness among people for greater participation in the democratic process to elect public representatives, the district administration in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday organised a voter awareness run ahead of the upcoming parliamentary polls.
Residents and school children in Kanpur participated in the marathon, which was flagged off by the city's district magistrate Roshan Jacob.
Jacob said the aim behind the marathon is not only to encourage people to exercise their vote but also to inform people about the importance of voting in the electoral process of the country.
"The goal behind this marathon is to ensure voter awareness in the city. Previously, in the last general elections, the voter percentage was only 40 percent. But, this time we are hoping that the numbers will increase to 70 percent. We expect everyone to participate in this with full enthusiasm. Voting ensures our participation in the democratic process of the country. We are hopeful that each and every resident of Kanpur ensures their participation. Keeping this in mind the marathon is a symbolic of the same," she said.
The participants also praised the efforts of the district authorities and called it a promising initiative to influence people's minds.
"This is a big campaign and this initiative aims to spread awareness to vote, among people across the country and also encourages participation of people in the electoral process," said a participant, Asha Singh.
