Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson M.J. Akbar on Monday expressed shock over former Supreme Court (SC) judge Justice (retired) Maarkandey Katju's statement on corruption in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government led by Manmohan Singh.

"What Justice Katju has said first confirms something that we all knew that the previous government of Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh was possibly the most corrupt in the history of this country. It was corrupt either by filling in its personal pockets, filling in the pockets of its allies or in order to preserve themselves in power they were willing to sell the national interest down in any manner possible," said Akbar.

"This is the evidence and proof of how the allies blackmailed the government of Manmohan Singh and how he was ready to accept that blackmail if he could preserve his place in the Prime Minister's office," Akbar added.

He also said that what is truly shocking about the incident is not the corruption of the congress that is well known, but of the involvement of the highest names in our judiciary in this episode.

"This is really what will shake the confidence of the nation. It is ironic that the same judges have no opportunity when it comes to giving summons to others. I think this is a time to take a very deep look into what has happened within the judiciary as well as within the political system," said Akbar.

Earlier today, Katju had claimed that a district Judge, who had several allegations of corruption against him, was not sacked and was elevated to the post of additional judge of the Madras High Court owing to the pressure put on the UPA Government and the judicial collegium by a Tamil Nadu-based party.
