Kazakhstan has called on Syria to transfer its chemical weapons to U.N. control, as it believes this is a real prerequisite for resolution of what has been a lengthy and deadly conflict in Syria through a dialogue.

A statement released by Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry through its embassy in New Delhi said:" Kazakhstan supports the initiative of transferring the Syrian chemical weapons under international control and Syria's accession to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction.

"We believe that this step will be a real prerequisite for resolution of the lengthy and deadly conflict in Syria through a dialogue. Kazakhstan calls on the Syrian authorities to take immediate and comprehensive measures for implementation of the initiative in close cooperation with international partners," the statement added.

The Kazakh Government further said: "Our country welcomes the restraint that the international community exercises in this situation, which can be assessed objectively only basing on the final conclusions of the UN experts."

In general, Kazakhstan continues to call on urgent convocation of international conference to resolve the conflict in Syria ("Geneva-2"), aimed at ceasing the violence and determining the political future of Syria through dialogue and conciliation, the statement said in conclusion.
