Kei Nishikori knocked out of US Open, Venus makes strong statement

There were few upsets on day 1 of the US Open at Flushing Meadows as Rafael Nadal, Richard Gasquet, Sabine Lisicki, Li Na, Serena Williams and David Ferrer, all scored comfortable victories.

Venus Williams upset 12th seed Kirsten Flipkens to prove to critics that she still packs a punch.

However, Japanese tennis ace Kei Nishikori lost to Britain's Daniel Evans in a shock straight-set defeat.

Fernando Verdasco was involved in an epic five-setter with Croatia's Ivan Dodig, where the Croatian marginally got the better of him.
