The killing of 28 people on a bus in Kenya by al Shabab militants is intended to start a "religious war", said a senior adviser to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Abdikadir Mohammed urged the people of Kenya to stand together against the crimes, reported the BBC.

Al Shabab gunmen attacked the bus in northern Kenya shooting non-Muslim passengers dead.

The gunmen separated non-Muslims by asking them to read from the Koran, said officials and witnesses. People who could not read were shot in the head, they added.

Al Shabab, the Somalia based militant group has carried out numerous attacks across Kenya since 2011.
