State police on Wednesday took four people into custody after a mother-daughter duo allegedly committed suicide in the state capital on Tuesday.
The duo allegedly attempted suicide by setting themselves ablaze fearing the confiscation of their house after failing to pay the bank loan. Both of them have succumbed to their injuries. The incident happened in the Neyyattinkara region of Thiruvananthapuram district.
The 40-year-old Lekha and 19-year-old Vyshnavi committed suicide after Neyyattinkara branch of the Canara Bank issued a seizure notice. The bank asked them to repay Rs 4,80,000 by May 14.
According to relatives, Lekha's husband Chandra took a loan of Rs 5 lakh to construct a house in 2003. They had paid the principal amount but failed to repay the loan instalments after 2010. Since then, the bank was demanding the balance amount of Rs 4,80,000, which was pending including interest.
Four people including her husband are being questioned by the police. Further details are awaited.
