Union Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad commissioned the first high speed rural broadband of India in the district on Monday in the presence of Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, state Industry and IT Minister P. K. Kunhalikutty and Telecom Secretary Rakesh Garg.
Currently the district has eight block offices and 53 gram panchayats. The block offices and 52 of the 53 gram panchayats have been connected on optical fibre. One gram panchayat-Edamalakudy, has been connected through VSAT.
Edamalakudy consists of 26 tribal villages with a population of around 2200. For the first time the villages under this Panchayat would be connected through Mobile phones and internet.
The establishment of NOFN would open up new avenues for access service providers to launch next generation services and spur creation of local employment opportunities in a big way.
