United States Secretary of State John Kerry has reportedly asserted that killing existing extremists will not tackle extremism or prevent more people from joining their ranks.

While speaking to a White House conference on dealing with the spread of violent ideologies on Thursday, Kerry noted that it would be "kind of stupid" to just attack those who are fighting currently and ignore the root causes of extremism, reported News24.

He stressed on the need to employ all approaches from killing extremists on the ground to improving living conditions and creating opportunities for disaffected youth.

The statement came at a time when the U.S. strategy for combating extremism and preventing radicalistaion is being criticized by detractors who believe it should be focused on military action.
