US Secretary of State John Kerry has said that the US-led coalition combating the Islamic State (IS) militants has caused some serious damage to the terror group, but warned that the fight could go on for years.

According to Dawn, the coalition has carried out around 1,000 air strikes in Iraq and Syria since September after the Sunni militants made large territorial advances.

Kerry said at a coalition meeting in Brussels that "it was much harder now than when they had started for Daesh to assemble forces in strength, to travel in convoys and to launch concerted attacks".

He warned that the campaign against the Islamic State would be a long one, saying the coalition's commitment will be measured most likely in years.
