The Khanabad district in the restive Kunduz province of Afghanistan has fallen to Taliban control after fierce clashes between the security and the insurgent group.

The clashes have resulted into the closure of the main highway connecting Kunduz with the northeastern Takhar province, reports Khamma Press.

Local officials and a lawmaker have confirmed the report.

The move comes as the Taliban group has intensified attacks on Kunduz province and launched several attacks on key districts of the province during the past several months.

The Taliban militants have also attempted to take control of the strategic Kunduz city which was briefly captured by the group last year.
