ANI Monte Carlo [Monaco]

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen will start from the pole position for the first time since 2008 after the Ferrari driver dominated qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, scheduled for Sunday.

Raikkonen was 0.043seconds quicker than team mate and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, whose championship rival Lewis Hamilton could manage only 13th.

The last time Raikkonen took the top spot here, in 2005 for McLaren, he went on to lead every lap on his way to winning the race. It is the second pole of the season for Ferrari after Vettel was on the front of the grid in Russia.

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull's Max Verstappen will fill the second row of the grid on Sunday's race, with Daniel Ricciardo in the second Red Bull and Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz immediately behind them.

Jenson Button qualified ninth on his return to Formula 1 as a substitute for Fernando Alonso while the Spaniard races at the Indianapolis 500 this weekend.

However, he will start at the back of the grid because of a 15-place grid penalty for using too many engine parts.

Button received a 15-place grid penalty after McLaren were forced to make unscheduled power unit changes to the British driver's car.
