Sri Lanka has sent New Zealand out of the World Twenty20 tournament on Monday by beating them by 59 runs in the race for the semi-finals in Chittagong.

Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath rocked New Zealand, chasing a modest 120-run total, by conjuring up figures of 3-5 to bowl them for 60 in 15.3 overs, which is New Zealand's lowest total in T20s.

According to Sport24, the win gave Sri Lanka their fourth successive semi-final place and they will play the winners of Tuesday's game in Group 2 between defending champions West Indies and Pakistan ahead of the first semi-final in Dhaka on Thursday.

New Zealand, which played the semi-final only in the inaugural edition of the World T20 in 2007, saw their previous lowest T20 total of 80 against Pakistan at Auckland two years ago.

New Zealand's current lowest total also becomes the third lowest total ever in all T20s, behind the Netherlands' 39, also against Sri Lanka in Bangladesh last Monday and 56 by Kenya against Afghanistan at Sharjah last year.

The report added that India would take on South Africa in the second semi on Friday, with the final to be played in Dhaka on Sunday.
