Teenaged South Korea-born New Zealand golf prodigy Lydia Ko fired a 29th consecutive under-par round in the ANA Inspiration in California to equal the LPGA Tour record.

The world number one carded a one-under-par 71 in the opening round of the first women's major of the season to equal Swede Annika Sorenstam's record.

The 17-year-old, who has won six LPGA Tour titles but is yet to claim her first major crown, branded the landmark as 'pretty cool', Stuff.co.nz reported.

Ko, who is the youngest ever number one, said that she really wasn't hitting her driver well, and added that there the rough can get pretty thick.

Ko insisted that when one is in that position, a record was the last thing she was thinking about.
