The Congress on Friday described the militant attack in Kokrajhar, Assam, as a serious security issue that needs to be addressed by the Centre on a priority basis.
"This is a very serious security concern. I hope that the Government of India and Chief Minister of Assam will take immediate steps to ensure the safety of the people, not just of Kokrajhar but of the entire state of Assam," said Congress leader and Member of Parliament from Silchar (Assam) Sushmita Dev.
Dev requested the people to be careful and reminded the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of his poll promises.
"The Chief Minister of Assam had promised peace and prosperity of Assam, and within two or three month of governance, the Militant have challenged him. I hope he will rise to the occasion," she said.
At least 12 civilians have been reported killed today in Kokrajhar, Assam, by militants who were engaged in a fierce gunbattle with security forces.

The gunbattle ensued when the armed extremists opened fired at a market around 12 kms from Kokhrajar.
Reports said the attackers had lobbed a grenade in a crowded market place.
One of the attackers is also said to have been gunned down.
