Family members of the deceased Kolkata rape victim met Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi here today, reiterating their demand for death penalty for the accused.

The family, speaking to the media after the meeting, said they were assured of justice.

"They assured us that the government will consider their demands in due course of time. Our demand is very simple that death penalty should be given to the accused in the rape case," said Ramachandra Sen, a family member of the victim.

In a violent incident, the 20-year-old woman was allegedly abducted, gang-raped and murdered on June 07 in North 24 Parganas district of the West Bengal. The victim was on her way home from college, after an examination, according to reports.

The deceased girl's family had refused any help from the state government and put forward a solitary demand for death penalty for the rapists.

Early last month, Mamata Banerjee visited the victim's family and urged the courts to provide severe punishment to those accused in the case. Six people have been arrested in the case.
